"Charles and Mary” have been fortunate in their lives and careers, and blessed with children who are well-on-their-way as well. Nevertheless, some of their friends and loved ones have been impacted by cancer – so they were determined to lend what financial support they could in the battle against the disease. Their legal advisor suggested making a legacy gift in the estate plan they were drafting and pointed them to CancerConnects as a cancer-focused organization dedicated to impacting Syracuse and surrounding areas. A few conversations later, and legal wording easily added to their will, Charles and Mary have now left 25% of their estate to CancerConnects, realizing some tax benefits in the process.

“ABC Corp” is a Syracuse-based insurance company looking to give back to the community that’s helped them become a successful company. After polling their employees to decide which cause to support – and which community issue was nearest and dearest to their hearts – they opted to direct their charitable giving to supporting patients facing and working through a cancer diagnosis. A phone call to CancerConnects offered ABC Corp a range of ways to meet their philanthropic goal – with immediate and efficient impact they can see each year through both data and heart-warming anecdotes.

“Megan” is a mother of two young children who lives in Constantia, far from her cancer support group. She was feeling overwhelmed and alone in her cancer battle, until she applied to the CancerConnects’ Patient Mentor Program. In response, CancerConnects matched her with a mentor whose diagnosis and treatment plan were similar, and who’d also had small children at the time of her diagnosis. Being able to talk on the phone in the evening, after her kids are asleep, has been helpful for Megan. She and her mentor have discussed ways to talk to Megan’s children about her illness; she’s received helpful tips to relieve nausea from treatment; and even when she and her mentor are too busy to chat, they text one another silly jokes or words of encouragement.

CancerConnects Mentors are just a phone call away! If you would like to support CancerConnects’ vital programs for local people in oncology treatment, please donate today!

“Doug” was recently diagnosed with colon cancer. He lives in Cortland, but his oncologist is in Syracuse. His chemo treatments leave him groggy, so he can’t drive himself to and from his vital appointments. The cost of a taxi is prohibitively expensive for him, as he is retired and on a fixed income. Doug applied for financial assistance through CancerConnects’ Angel Fund, and now CancerConnects is scheduling and paying for rides through a medical transportation company. Doug can relax knowing that he has reliable rides to his treatment appointments, and the expense is one less thing he has to worry about.

Your tax deductible donation to CancerConnects’ Angel Fund helps meet the crucial and urgent needs of people going through cancer treatment here in CNY!

“Lisa” was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. She was scheduled to undergo a mastectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation. Along the way, she had so many questions about each stage of treatment, she applied to the CancerConnects’ Mentor Program. She was matched with a volunteer mentor who had gone through a similar treatment plan -- and talking to someone who had walked in her shoes provided a lot of hope. After Lisa got through active treatment, she decided to become a mentor herself, because her mentor had helped her so much! She went through the mentor orientation training in 2017 and has mentored several newly diagnosed breast cancer patients: Thankful for her good health, and all the support she received through CancerConnects, Lisa is glad to be able to pay it forward!

CancerConnects provides an eight-hour training class to new mentors once a year, together with continuing education on an ongoing basis and currently has 78 trained Patient and Caregiving Mentors who are eager to help! If you’d like to support the Mentoring Program, your tax-deductible donation can provide necessary training materials and continuing education for our invaluable Volunteer Mentors!

“Alice” is in chemotherapy treatment for lung cancer. She lives alone and is used to running errands on her own, but because she is immunocompromised, she was worried about visiting stores for the Ensure, ginger candies and vitamins uses to keep her strength, maintain her weight, and stave off nausea. Alice applied for help through the CancerConnects’ Angel Fund financial assistance program, so we ordered and paid for her supplies through an online pharmacy -- and had them delivered to her front door.

The Angel Fund is 100% community donor driven, which truly means neighbors helping neighbors! Moreover, donations don’t just pay patients’ bills, they provide much needed comfort and peace of mind to folks right here in CNY who are going through cancer treatment!
